The fourth annual SMARTSkills workshop on Research Vessel Equipment and Instrumentation took place at the Marine Institute, Oranmore on Friday April 29th 2016. This workshop was a collaboration between SMART and the Marine Institute and follows the annual Research Vessel Users Workshop on Thursday 28th April, also in Oranmore.
SMARTSkills 2016 aims to increase capacity in ocean science by showcasing selected scientific equipment, instrumentation and software on Ireland’s research vessel to early stage researchers and research vessel users. A wide selection of equipment and instrumentation will be available on the day for hands on training. This intensive one-day event will focus on the hydro-acoustic and remote sensing instrumentation and systems used in the discovery, mapping and quantification of Ireland’s marine resources. Practical demonstrations and toolbox talks will be given by a range of national and International experts over parallel sessions on:
- Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP)
- IXSEA Blue Echoes Sub Bottom Profiling (SBP)
- Conductivity Temperature Depth (CTD) sensor package and rosette systems
- Kongsberg Multibeam Seafloor Information System (SIS)
- MaxSea Chart plotter systems
- Shipboard Computer System (SCS)
Training will begin with the basic set-up and operation of gear and progress to more advanced data acquisition, processing and analysis.
Attendance at SMARTSkills 2016 will also serve as a networking opportunity to foster collaborations through the sharing of ideas and common interests among a diverse community of researchers, scientists and technicians.
To register your attendance please fill in the online registration form and indicate your preferred sessions. Please note registration closes on Tuesday 26th April.
