TTRS CE17009 & CE17011 Western European Small Pelagics Acoustic Survey

This survey is the Western European Small Pelagic Acoustic Survey (WESPAS). Mr Ciaran O'Donnell will lead an experienced team of biologists from the Marine Institute along a series of  acoustic transects deploying a pelagic trawl to ground truth acoustic traces of herring and other small pelagic species.  Other sampling opportunities will exist through the vessel’s underway system and regular CTD deployments. This survey will take place over two legs and forms part of a time series used to provide biomass estimates and improve the resolution of herring stock assessments in ICES areas VIIB and VIA and informs the assessment of herring stocks by ICES expert groups.

  • Embarkation and disembarkation on the first leg of this survey will be from Galway on the 6th and 26th of June respectively.
  • Embarkation on the second leg will be from Galway on the 4th of July with disembarkation at either Cork or Galway on the 21st of July.

This multidisciplinary survey carried out over two legs 0f 16 and 18 days will appeal to a postgraduate or advanced undergraduate student with a confirmed interest in one or more of the following themes: fisheries acoustics and biology. It forms one of a number of annual fisheries acoustic operated annually by Fisheries Advisory Services of the Marine Institute.  Proposals for data collection that can be accommodated within survey operations are welcome. The 2016 survey report can be downloaded here.

To be considered to take part in this survey applicants should be able to demonstrate significant seagoing experience and be in possession of a current ENG 11 medical certificate and  have undergone personal survival techniques training (PST STCW 95) within the last five years.
