TTRS CE16003 Mackerel and Horse Mackerel Egg Survey

An opportunity to participate in the Marine Institute’s Mackerel and Horse Mackerel egg survey from west of the Shannon to the Bay of Biscay is being offered through SMART’s Training Through Research Surveys (TTRS) scheme. Embarkation and disembarkation will be from Galway on the 4th of February and the 24th of February respectively.

Brendan O’Hea will lead an experienced team of biologists from the Marine Institute along a series of transects deploying a Gulf V11 plankton sampler and pelagic trawl to sample eggs, larvae and mackerel in the water column.  CTD data will be collected by a sensor mounted on the Gulf VII.  This 21 day survey will appeal to postgraduate students with a research interest in themes associated with fisheries biology, biological oceanography and marine megafauna.

Applicants should consider down time on the survey as an opportunity to progress written and data aspects of their research.   Proposals for data collection that can be accommodated without interruption to the survey plan will also be considered.
