CE15007 Transatlantic Added Value 2015: 21st April - 4th May

This is the fourth year of collaboration between the Marine Institute of Ireland and Memorial University of Newfoundland.  The survey transect will deliver the Celtic Explorer to St Johns in Newfoundland from where it will commence an acoustic survey of the Grand Bank’s Cod and Capelin stocks.  The chartering of the Celtic Explorer by the Marine Institute of Memorial University is testament to the multidisciplinary capacity of Ireland’s national research vessel infrastructure.

The transect (CE14006) will take 14 days and focus on marine biological, oceanographic and hydrographic sampling and data acquisition. The wide range of objectives set by Chief Scientist, Dr Louise Allcock of NUIG aim to investigate links between components of the deep scattering layer assemblage and oceanographic processes.  Samples collected will contribute to ongoing and novel studies of larvae from a wide range of taxonomic groups and the plankton that support them and influence their distribution.  Investigative methodologies will focus on CTDs, Acoustics and multilayer sampling.  Supporting data sets to be collected will include megafauna observations and underway and targeted microplastic sampling.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate seagoing experience commensurate with the potentially rigourous demands of a spring Atlantic crossing.

This call will close on Wednesday the 25th of March

This survey will embark at Galway and disembark at St John’s Newfoundland.

Successful applicants are liable for their own transportation and associated shore based accommodation costs.
