CE20012 Celtic Sea Herring Acoustic Survey

This survey contributes to a time series used to track the biomass and abundance of herring in the Celtic Sea and informs stock assessments by ICES expert groups. Mr Ciaran O'Donnell will lead an experienced team of biologists from the Marine Institute on survey transects deploying a pelagic trawl to ground truth echo traces of herring and other pelagic species. The survey will take place over two legs between the 4th and 24th of October.

The Celtic Sea Herring Acoustic Survey is an excellent opportunity for graduates and postgraduate students who wish to develop field skills and careers in fisheries science, marine mammal and seabird data collection.

Two bursaries are offered on each leg of the survey. Survey legs are as follows:

  • CE20012 Celtic Sea Herring Acoustic Survey Leg 1: 4 to 14 October. Estimated value of bursary: €950
  • CE20012 Celtic Sea Herring Acoustic Survey Leg 2: 14 to 24 October. Estimated value of bursary: €950

To be considered eligible to take part in this survey applicants should be able to demonstrate seagoing experience and be in possession of a current ENG 11 medical certificate and a personal survival techniques training (PST STCW 95) certificate.
