CE15010 Northwest Herring Acoustic Survey: 24th June - 14th July

CE15010 Northwest Herring Acoustic Survey: 24th June - 14th July

Dr Cormac Nolan will lead an experienced team of biologists from the Marine Institute along a series of  acoustic transects deploying a pelagic trawl to ground truth acoustic traces of herring and other pelagic species.  Other sampling opportunities will exist through the vessel’s underway system and regular CTD deployments. This survey forms part of a time series used to provide biomass estimates and improve the resolution of herring stock assessments in ICES areas VIIB and VIA.

Embarkation and disembarkation will be from Galway on the 6th of June and the 14th of July respectively.

This 21 day multidisciplinary survey will appeal to a postgraduate or advanced undergraduate student with a confirmed interest in one or more of the following themes: fisheries science, acoustics, and marine mega fauna.  Proposals for data collection that can be accommodated within survey operations are welcome. The 2014 survey report can be downloaded at: http://oar.marine.ie/handle/10793/1058

The closing date for applications for this survey is Wednesday 6th of May.
