CE15009 QuERCi - Quantifying Environmental Controls on Cold-water Coral Reef Growth: 9th-23rd June

This multidisciplinary survey will be led by Prof Andy Wheeler of the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences at UCC.  The principal scientific objectives of this ambitious survey include:

  • An evaluation of the status of cold-water coral reefs in the Belgica Mounds SAC and the Porcupine Bank Canyon SAC.
  • To define the extent of the distribution of cold-water coral reefs (Moira Mounds) beyond the Belgica Mound Province SAC continuing from existing high resolution acoustic  imagery.
  • To elucidate the controls of bedload sediment transport, current regime and particular organic matter flux on cold-water coral reef morphology, zonation, diversity and “health”in the region of the SACs.
  • An assessment of the rate of change in the structure and characteristics of cold-water coral reefs.
  • To assess the control of canyon-head processes on cold-water coral growth
  • A qualitative and quantitative characterization of biomineralized  micro-fauna to identify and standardize “Benthic Foraminifera Facies” on and off-mound and identify possible bioindicators for Moira CWCs

Investigative methodologies will include ROV,ROV mounted MBES, Chirper sub bottom profiling system, CTD, current meters, day grabs and box cores.  Preferred applicants will have research interests that align with these objectives or the methodologies used to achieve them.

The closing date for applications for this survey is Wednesday 6th of May.
