Call Now Closed: Training Through Research Surveys Scheme 2017

The Training Through Research Surveys Scheme (TTRS) is a collaboration with the Marine Institute that increases national capacity in offshore marine research by offering seagoing placements on a range of research surveys on-board the national research vessels, RV Celtic Explorer and RV Celtic Voyager. On-board placements provide the experience and skills required to work at sea and facilitate career development in ocean science. Participation also serves as a valuable opportunity to network with leading Irish and European marine scientists.

If TTRS sounds like an opportunity for you, please follow the links below for survey details.
Advantages of Participating
  • Gain valuable seagoing experience.
  • Join and work with a team of experienced marine scientists on a dedicated research survey.
  • Contribute to the surveys goals.
  • Acquire multidisciplinary and discipline specific field skills.
  • Establish new professional contacts and extend networks.
To read previous participant's TTRS experience please visit the SMART blog.
Applications are invited from final-year undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students from across the island of Ireland and can be submitted via the online application form.

  • Applicants must have some form of prior sea going experience.
  • Participants must hold a valid ENG11 medical certificate and a Personal Survival Techniques (PST) certificate (STCW95).
Please note ENG11 medical certificates must be renewed every two years and PST certification renewed every five years. Information on obtaining medical and sea-survival certificates, and check lists for scientists embarking on national research vessels are available at this link.
Medical practices currently providing ENG11 medical examinations and certifications can be found at this link.
Training course providers for STCW95 certification can be found at this link.
Please note TTRS placement positions are not funded and participants are responsible for any costs incurred in traveling to and from the vessel.
