Irish Anglerfish and Megrim Survey 2023

This survey is the seventh in a series began by the Marine Institute in 2016. The main purpose of the survey is to provide additional information for the assessment of the monkfish and megrim stocks around Ireland and to extend maturity sampling for other commercial species.  Sampling will take place in waters to the west and north of Ireland with demersal trawl gear.

Sampling protocols will focus on collecting biometric data for monkfish and megrim and other commercial species and benthic invertebrates.  Participants will develop practical and organisational skills in all aspects of biological sampling, data recording, screening, saving and survey operations.

The 2023 survey legs are:

  • IAMS Leg 1:  11th to 23rd of February
  • IAMS Leg 2:  23rd of February to the 7th of March
  • IAMS Leg 3:  13th to 22nd of April

The closing date for Applications for legs 1 and 2 is Wednesday the 18th of January.

The closing date for applications for leg 3 is Friday 24th of February.

This is a great opportunity to gain experience in biological sampling and marine data collection. Applications are invited from graduate and post graduate students from HEIs throughout the Island of Ireland wishing to develop a career in fisheries science.
