CE18009-010 Western European Shelf Pelagic Acoustic Survey (WESPAS)

This survey will take place over two legs and forms part of a time series used to provide biomass estimates of herring and boar fish stocks in ICES areas VIIB and VIA and inform stock assessments by ICES expert groups. Mr Ciaran O'Donnell will lead an experienced team of biologists from the Marine Institute  on survey transects deploying a pelagic trawl to ground truth echo traces of herring, boar fish and other pelagic species.  The survey will take place over two legs as follows:

Leg 1: 9th to 28th of June

Leg 2: 3rd to 24th of July

WESPAS is an excellent opportunity for graduates and postgraduate students who wish to develop careers in fisheries biology and acoustics.  Proposals for data collection for oceanographic, cetacean and seabird research that can be accommodated within survey operations are welcome. WESPAS forms one of a number of annual fisheries acoustic operated annually by Fisheries Advisory Services of the Marine Institute.
